Clothing (Sun Protection)
Ask anyone about sunscreen, and they will talk about suntan lotion, its
SPF rating, but never say anything about clothing. Most summer clothing
offers minimal protection, a wet t-shirt provides at best an SPF. of 3, dry,
an average a factor 7.
Not the things you might wear on the beach but a tightly woven fabric in
a dark colours for example, may have a protection factor of 10, but a denim
shirt may have a factor of 1,500+.
There are also "Sun Guard" products you can treat your clothes with,
which increase the protection to as much 96 percent UV protection. But your
brightly coloured beach boy, Hawaiian, Cost Too Much T-Shirt, is not going
to be much use.
- Cover up as much as possible.
Lightweight, tightly-woven shirts and long pants will block most of the
sun's rays.
- Wear a hat.
It should shade the ears, face, temples, and back of the neck. You need to
add a neck shade to protect the the neck.
