If you want to look good, your hair which is the easiest to change, you can cut it, colour it, plait it and do something different with it every day. Unfortunately, it is also very hard to keep it clean and healthy. The easiest way to deal with dirty hair is to shampoo it. But shampooing it too often will weakens the hair.

Conditioners

Each hair is coated with tiny scales of protein. If your hair is dry or damaged, the scales are ruffled, giving your hair a dull, rough look. Conditioners can help smooth the scales down by coating each strand with a fine film of oil. This keeps your hair shiny, massage some conditioner into your hair after shampooing then rinse it out.

Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments can seal each hair and help prevent moisture evaporating. They are especially good for your hair. You can buy almond oil or hot oil treatments from a chemist. Massage the oil into your hair. Wrap a hot towel around your head and sleep with the oil on your hair. In the morning, shampoo your hair then rinse.

Tips

  • Don't use too much shampoo.
  • Use a conditioner suitable for your hair type.
  • Rinse your hair thoroughly.
  • Dry your hair gently with a towel - letting it dry the natural way is the best.
  • Don't rub your hair too vigorously when it is wet, as it is at its weakest and can snap easily.
  • Comb through your hair with a wide-toothed comb, as gently as possible.
  • Brittle hair must be allowed to dry naturally.
  • If you find the thicker hair difficult to manage, it may be best to have a short styled hair cut.

Hair Transplant

There are several methods of surgery.

  • One is to replace individual hairs or groups of hair. This is called grafting. The surgeon uses small plugs of hair called mini or micro grafts. At any one time 250 to 750 miniature plugs are inserted.
  • Another method is to excise the bald area and replace it with flaps of hair bearing skin. This is scalp skin with normal hair that is moved into a new position.

These operations are done under either local anesthetic or general anesthetic (asleep). You can choose. Most of the time these are outpatient operations and a stay in the hospital is not needed. Some hair grafts are inserted in the office setting.

Risk

All operations have some risk. It is helpful to divide the risks of surgery into two groups.

  • First those that are seen in all operations
  • Second those that are unique or special for this operation.

In the first group, the main risks are swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, a scar and numbness or change in feeling. The need for multiple operations, the scars which can stretch, a poor result and numbness.

The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people are back at work within a day or two after hair grafts and week or two after a flap. The recovery is much longer after tissue expansion.
