October 31st we celibate Halloween, a tradition that goes back in time a long way. But what exactly is Halloween ' dressing up in spooky costumes, trick or treat, ducking apples '. Well what ever it "was" today its just a fun day we celebrate.

Halloween, or all hallows eve, derived from a pagan festival. It is traditionally the night when ghosts and spirits have the power to roam the world. Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.

Well that's enough of the pagan history lesson, today Halloween is nothing about that at all, and despite its historical events, Halloween now is about having parties, dressing up in fancy costumes, and generally having a good fun time. So don't take it to seriously....

Jack-O'-Lanterns
These are hollowed out pumpkins with a face cut into one side. People once carved out turnips to use as lanterns on Halloween. These days we carve out pumpkins instead, according to a legend, jack-o-lanterns were named after a man called Jack, irrelevant today. :)- You can place a torch inside one of these pumpkins to light it up, then place it in your window to let others know you are also celebrating Halloween.
Trick or Treat
Halloween was a time for making mischief  in many parts of England, children would disguise themselves as witches, ghosts and would knock on doors demanding a Trick or Treat, traditionally they were always given a treat, mostly a bag of assorted sweets. (Note: I always stock up on sweets ready)
Ducking apples
Just don't ask about this :). The idea is you have a bowl of water and place an apple in it, the water should be enough to cover the apple when pushed down. The contestant now tries to pick up the apple with his/her teeth by biting it, a winner gets even more treats :)-
Toffee apples
Always a favourite on Halloween, just use a bag of sugar in a saucepan, pore in enough water so that its all soaked into the sugar, then heat, test it by using a spoon to drop a little into cold water, if it sets hard the mixture is ready, now using a stick inserted into an apple, place the apple in the mixture to cover it, let it cool on a buttered tray... delicious..

Have a happy Halloween !
