Legal Requirements
Anyone from any country can
get married in England or Wales by either civil or religious ceremony. No legal
distinction is made between UK and overseas.
Marriages can only take place in
authorized premises where the marriage can be legally solemnized.
Legal locations include
- Register offices
- Premises that have been approved by the local
authority
E.g.
stately homes,
castles and hotels,
churches,
chapels of the Church of England and Church in Wales
other churches that have been registered
naval,
air force,
military chapels.
All marriage ceremonies must take place in the presence of ;
- a superintendent registrar
- vicar/priest
- be witnessed by at least two competent people
