The predecessors of early animated movies were the newspaper comic strips
of the 1890s. Technically, the first short, fully animated film was Humorous
Phases of Funny Faces (1906) by J. Stuart Blackton.
New York Herald comic strip animator Winsor McCay (1869) produced a string of comic strips from 1904 to 1911, with titles like Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend, Little Sammy Sneeze, and Little Nemo in Slumberland. Although McCay wasn't the first, he nonetheless helped to define the new industry.
The first animated character during the silent era was the mischievous Felix the Cat, in Pat Sullivan Studios.
Inspired by Kipling's The Cat That Walked By Himself Originated by young animator Otto Messmer, the cat's first two cartoons were the five-minute Feline Follies (1919) and Musical Mews (1919).
Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop, Popeye, Superman, Gulliver's Travels were all part of the early animation.
The site would not be complete without the mention of the Disney' Animated Movies. Unlike a lot of new computer generated animation, the early Disney' animated movies were made one frame at a time by hand. With the very first movies around 1920 like Newman Laugh O Grams.
